Ice Princess Compelled Me to Do a Review

Ice Princess - the name lets you guess what this entertainer is about. Will it be a sort of any fairy tale like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs? Not a long guess is needed. The opening scene itself is evident that it is about a young girl whose obsession is ice-skating.

Casey Carlyle, in her pursuit of winning a scholarship, decides to do a project on a theme that interests her most to give personal flavor. Being equally passionate for both Physics and ice-skating, Casey chooses the application of Physics on skating as her project. She ends up in learning skating formally to improve her project but in the course of time, she finds out that her passion leans more towards ice-skating than Physics. Casey proves to be exceptionally good at skating not only because of her craze for skating but also because of her knowledge in the application of Physics. Her mother, being aware of the impending distraction on her only daughter, refutes Casey’s desire to get trained formally.

Tina Harwood, a former skater, identifies Casey’s determination and prepares her to appear in competitions. Jennifer, Tina’s daughter, though being a good skater, feels that she is compelled in to skating because of satisfying her mother’s dream. When Tina restricts her from all teenagers’ fun, Jennifer walks out and decides to do no more skating. Casey, with her kitty full of passion for skating, and Tina, with her craving to make an ideal skater, join together. Result? Casey wins the Sectionals and her mother’s love and support again.

When Casey tries to get Tina’s permission to enter in to the ice rink and to join classes later on, it gives us déjà vu of The Million Dollar Baby. She reminds us Maggie when she wins her trainer’s heart to become a trainee, though paying a high amount which she earns by working in a food stand. Being the only daughter of a lecturer, Casey is well portrayed as a shy and studious Physics student. But she rejects the offer given in Harvard, and is besieged to undertake skating in spite of mother’s disapproval. How determined she is when she tells her mother, “I am not giving up my dream, I am giving up your dream.”

Tina and Jennifer are setting examples of another mother-and-daughter relationship where the daughter is compelled to live by the mother’s own whims and fancies. Like Casey, Jennifer too comes out of the invisible bond that her mother laid in the name of dream and love. Both the mothers realize their daughter’s aspirations and give up their own. Ice Princess, in that way, is a tribute to mother’s love which is unconditional always.

Teddy Harwood, Tina’s son is gentle and endearing. This Mr. Right comes for Casey’s rescue in the party as well as for his mother’s when Casey mistakes her for being partial. Jennifer embodies the new-gen of today, who loves partying and to be free from diet and responsibilities.

In an effort to depict Casey as an innocent girl, Michelle Trachtenberg is made to show her jumpiness till the end of the movie. Michelle, getting complete focus, is definitely more revitalized than how she appeared in EuroTrip, a comedy drama.

As the story needed, the ice backdrop and the gliding music keep up our spirit to enjoy the flow – from Casey’s initiatives to become a professional skater to her yearning to win her mother’s love. The story is spun with a thread of comedy that makes the film worth watching.

Passion wins love and vice versa. Without them, nothing can be accomplished. It is not just the highlight of this entertainer but the generic fact of the universe as well.

Cell phone stands first when we list out the most inevitable gadgets that have become part and parcel and bundle of our lives. Have you ever tried living without it if you were using it for the past (at least) six months?

From the bedtime stories we heard from our grandparents, we know that centuries ago, when people had no trace of telephone, birds were the main source of communication. Was it possible for a bird to deliver the message to the right person within the expected time? Even the very serious messages with high sensitivity were delivered using birds. Messages regarding love and war too! But there were no stories where the messages were received by wrong recipient; no disclaimers were used.

Today, when texting has become a way of official communication, we find it extremely convenient to communicate through SMSes. Somehow asking for unplanned leave works out well through SMSes in offices. ‘Due to unavoidable circumstances, I am not …’ makes it easier to get leave than calling our managers and answering those bunches of tricky questions. Imagine, if there were no telephones and we have no options except sending a bird to request sick leave for a day. What if it drops the message or gets hurt on its way or cannot reach out to the right person or takes too much of time and delivers a day later? There will be enough of loss-of-pay by the end of the month, and we would end up in coming to office in all working days. Of course, that’s a positive end, if phone is banned completely.

People can stay away from their homes for long. Mommy and other loved ones are available on mobile phones whenever we want. Special thanks to all CUG-type schemes. Ironically, sometimes, we find it more comfortable to express ourselves well only through mobile phones. Not necessarily by talking but by ignoring a few calls too.

Both the employer and employee are busy. The former meets the later on phone to conduct interviews. As appearance is always deceptive, they rely on voice messages and proceed with their respective jobs. A few interesting love stories remain faithful to mobile phones and ‘wrong numbers.’ Love lasts as people hear very often. Those legendary love failures of Romeo and Juliet and Laila and Majnu would not have happened if they had Vodafone or Airtel then.

Whilst everyone is named with a number to contact, the government too is busy campaigning on avoiding cell phones while driving. This handy gadget, with other add-ons like camera, Fm, recorder, and Internet, has become the need of the day. To know the importance and value of your ‘Cell’y, try giving it to a service provider for a couple of days. You will feel being disconnected from the entire world and would suffer from Isolophobia, Autophobia, and Monophobia for sure.
